Stray Dog and the Chocolate Shake

Saturday Morning Flashback: 2003

Back in early 2004, my friend Kathryn Harvey came to visit me down in The Bahamas where I was taking a little break after quitting my corporate job and trying to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. (Oh, that?)

She brought down a 2 CD Mix that her friend Tom Brady (aka Loisaida to you) had burned for her. We played that damn mix every day and night on a little portable CD player, hanging out on our tropical back patio and drinking "Harborsides". When she left to go back to NYC, I begged her to leave at least one of the 2 CD's with me.

Little did I know then, that it would change my life. I was so blown away by all the 'new' music on it-stuff I wasn't hearing on the radio- that it made me realize how much I had lost touch with my passion for music... and I started spending a little time each day on the internet researching all these bands I had never heard of.

My love for that mix inspired an introduction to Tom Brady, who over the following two years, would become my business partner and co-creator of this here MusicFile!

Now, THAT'S a flashback worth remembering.

Needless to say, this song was on that mix. It's from Grandaddy's excellent 2003 album Sumday. I couldn't get it's quirky lyrics and infectious bump-a-long melody out of my head. Though Grandaddy is no more-the band broke up in 2006 because they just weren't making enough money- they live on as one of the best early examples of off-kilter indie rock... and frontman Jason Lytle now has a successful solo career.
